Pixar's Up House

July 29th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Could it be? Is it the house that inspired the design for Pixar’s high-flying adventure movie, Up?!

Pixar's inspiration for Up house?

Probably not, but it was neat to see the juxtaposition of the Victorian design in front of a very modern condominium building. Here’s an up close look at the details of the house.

India Street house details

This house is somewhere on India Street in San Diego’s Little Italy district. I was on the way to Filippi’s Pizza Grotto when I tugged on Boyfriend Dave’s shirt and said  – LOOK IT’S THE UP HOUSE!! He was just as excited as I was and started snapping away these photographs on my camera. Too cute! That’s a true animator, right there for you.

I was doing some research and found that a reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle asked the film’s producer and director about the house.

Up House

“While both filmmakers admitted that there was at least one house in the greater Oakland/Berkeley area that served as inspiration, neither would give me an address.” - wrote Peter Hartlaub

So alas pretty yellow house in San Diego is not the one. Hartlaub actually went on a hunt to find the house. So did Peter Sciretta at – who wrote about it in his Easter Eggs post for Pixar’s Up. According to Sciretta the house was partly inspired by a Victorian house near Sixth Street in Berkeley, CA.
