Being creepy can be fun

There’s nothing like catching an awesome 80s movie on a vast green field, with a great picnic spread, and  2,000 other like-minded souls.

But it’s definitely not as mainstream as it sounds -I caught Cinespia’s screening of “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” at Hollywood Forever, a cemetery that’s gregariously Hollywood with it’s large obelisk monuments and headstone etchings.

Dave proposed the idea a few months ago and I mentally swept it under the rug with our list of things to do.

Then it came up a couple weeks ago, his beloved Pee-wee Herman would be on the big screen. It sounded so fantastically off-beat and fun that I figured what the heck, pack up a picnic basket, lets go!

To my surprise, it went better than expected. No, you’re not sitting on dead people and it’s not as creepy when there are hundreds of other people around you.

We stopped by Gelson’s to pick up some booze, cheese, and crackers. I grabbed a mini-bottle of Merlot while Dave got a Sapporo and a Long Island ice tea in a suspicious can. Then there was a quick stop at Taco Bell. An awesome spread if you ask me.

Gates opened at 6:30 p.m., we arrived at 6:20 to find that some 200-300 people had already started a line. God only knows how long they had been waiting. We got dropped off by his friends who went in search of a parking spot, if you park on the grounds its $5. Admission is $10.

Once inside you’ll walk through the cemetery to an open field where the movie is screened on the backside of a building.

We laid out the blanket and devoured our food. A live DJ played music as the slight smell of pot filled the air, yeah that’s SoCal for you.

"it's like you guys're in hawaii or something! a....graveyard..."

The best part of it all? A surprise appearance by a blitzed Paul Reubens who rambled on for 30 minutes.

Definitely not your typical dinner and a  movie night.

Tips – Bring a thick blanket to sit on, the grass gets damp at night. Bring a flashlight, ladies it’s a long walk to the bathroom.  Candles are allowed, its a great atmosphere setter.

(Editor’s Note: Paul Reubens does not ramble; he preaches. Whatever he says may as well be inscribed in gold. Also his live show begins in November and tickets are available through ticketmaster)
