Yes, I went to a Hanson concert and rocked out.

Got reconnected with some old friends last weekend through the power of Facebook.

A friend from college had an extra ticket to the Hanson show at Club Nokia in LA last Saturday and was looking for someone to go with her to the concert. Almost everyone gave her a hard time for advertising this on the feed. And sheepishly I answered “im kinda slightly embarassed, but i’ll totally go if no one else takes you up on the offer : ) ”

I wanted to tap into the 13-year-old in me. There are certain songs that help mark certain events in my life and with a song so ubiquitous on the airwaves in 1997 MMMBop takes me back to summer camp. I didn’t know the lyrics but I had the infectious refrain in everyone’s head by the end of the week.

Then there was my ever curious reporter-side who had so many questions: Do they still play MMMBop? Who actually goes to a Hanson concert? Have they changed up their act?

And to my surprise it was an awesome performance… well, even a notch above that, it was AMAZING.

People change, mature, and move on. I’m not the same person as I was at 13. So why should I expect that from them? They still have a catchy/upbeat sound but they have also developed into this soulful, bluesy, alternative rock band.

It’s too bad that most people can’t get past their boyband past and give them credit for what they’ve accomplished in the last decade. They broke up with their label, went indie, and have taken a philanthropic approach to their music by bringing awareness of poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa by holding “walks” at each of their tour stops. If you put someone in a dark room and told them to listen to the band live, I’m betting no one would guess that it was Hanson from listening to their new music.

So ever since Saturday I’ve been all over the Internet, checking out their Web site, picking out my favorite songs on iTunes, and reading up on the last 10 years of their life. It’s like I’m catching up with an old friend.

They were so good I entered myself into a ticket giveaway and actually won! So I saw them live at the House of Blues in Anaheim on Wednesday and I smuggled in my Flip camera to prove my point. Judge for yourself.

BTW the video I took is not stable.. Apparently I’m still a bopper! But it’s definitely worth a listen.
