New York: On Location Tours – Sex and the City Hotspots

June 2nd, 2010 · 4 Comments · travel

In a place that’s known as the city that never sleeps – there’s always something to do. But knowing where to go, how to get there and slimming down the choices is the challenge. Starting off a stay in New York with a tour is a great way to get your self acclimated to the city and will help you decide the areas where you want to spend more time.

{Outside the HBO store where the tour ends}

For the Sex and the City enthusiast, the On Location Tours’ “Sex and the City Hotspots” is a fun three-and-a half-hour romp through Manhattan from the perspective of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. You learn about the neighborhoods where each of the fabulous four lived, the restaurants they frequented and some behind the scenes tidbits you would never know by watching the show.

Our tour guide Ally was knowledgeable and enthusiastic throughout the whole tour. I highly recommend her!

It may be a bit too girly to bring your other half so if he’s your travel partner prepare him for it or as an alternative consider doing the three hour Circle Line island tour. (I’ll have a post on that later this week.)

{Tour meets in front of the Pulitzer Fountain, across the street from The Plaza Hotel}

{Line to get on the bus}

Arrive early if you want a good seat. Our bus was clean, comfortable, air conditioned and had a bathroom! I’d recommend getting a seat on the left side, it seemed like a lot of locations were on our side.

{Video screens showed clips of locations we visited from the TV show and movie}

I’ve been to New York a half-dozen other times but I’ve never seen the city like this! My friend, Taylor, and I went on the first tour of the day at 10 a.m. By noon we had visited a sex shop and had a cupcake for breakfast. Not sure anywhere else in New York one can get an experience like that.

{The Pleasure Chest in the West Village}

{Magnolia Bakery cupcake in Greenwich Village}

{Door to Carrie’s apartment, #1866}

Worth noting, I overheard the tour guide telling a group of girls that she couldn’t give the specific location of Carrie’s stoop because it was a private residence. Luckily I stumbled across the location while exploring the streets in Greenwich Village. I didn’t pay attention to the street names, but I can tell you it’s not far from where the bus stops.

Another stop was at O’Nieals, Steve’s bar. They have pre-made $9 cosmopolitans available for guests on the tour. I didn’t buy one, but I’ve read reviews on Yelp that said they were okay. I did love the interior of the restaurant/bar. The deep brown wood of the bar and the furniture felt very Aiden!

I’m not going into much detail from here because part of the fun is being surprised! If you’re an avid fan of the show all I can say is just do it! The company has been doing these tours since at least the sixth season of the show so they know their stuff!

The cost: $44. I found an online promo code that gave me 15% percent off my ticket. If you’re buying tickets online try using “VRTL” in the box at check out. And if the tour guide was amazing like Ally, make sure to give her a tip at the end. Same for the bus driver!
