New York: Ziegfeld Theatre

June 3rd, 2010 · 1 Comment · travel

We made it Sex and the City afternoon following the tour in New York. We headed to Ziegfeld Theatre, which has got to be the most classic place to see a movie in Manhattan with its plush red velvet seats, crystal chandeliers and homage to movie classics that adorn its walls.

The 3,100+ seat theatre, which opened in December 1969, has been used to host movie premieres and gala events. It is the largest single screen cinema in New York, according to Wikipedia.

My friend really wanted to see Sex and the City 2 during opening weekend. Even though I had already seen it, I was game for the second round. With all the costume changes and details I knew I could watch it for a second time and even go for a third!

I bought two tickets in advance of the release date anticipating that show times would be sold out throughout the city. I did some research because I wanted to make this movie watching experience to be a little magical so I Yelped old movie theaters in Manhattan. Ziegfeld topped the list and now I can see why!

Little did I know (until I saw it for the first time) this theatre was actually used as a location in the second movie! It’s the site of Smith Jerrod’s movie premiere where Samantha and Miley Cyrus have their run-in  on the red carpet. I didn’t tell my friend about it and waited to see her reaction… The whole theatre went nuts when they realized where they were sitting was part of the movie! It was an awesome thing to experience.

If you’re in the city during a blockbuster movie opening weekend I’d highly suggest seeing it here. It’s a venue that is in excellent condition. I live in L.A. – the land of movie theaters –  and even a clean vintage theatre like this is rare! Bonus: Buy your tickets in advance and you won’t have to worry about waiting in line.
