Pageant of the Masters: Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

July 8th, 2010 · 2 Comments · orange county

Every year hundreds of volunteers put on Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach where museum masterpieces are recreated for the stage with real people filling in for the painted or sculpted subjects. It’s been a tradition in the cozy beach town since a vaudeville actress dressed local residents in costume for the first show in 1932.

There’s something magical and romantic about seeing the show in an open air theater during the summer. The way it manages to evoke untapped emotions as you watch the sun sink behind rolling hills leaving streaks of orange, red and pink into the sky, and feeling the crisp night air creep into your bones.

My mom and two of my aunts, with blankets in tow, headed to a special showing for media Tuesday night. This year the pieces featured elements relating to the Pageant’s theme, “Eat, Drink and Be Merry.” Also new performance parts were added which added to the merriment theme for the whole night, but I won’t divulge the details here. It will ruin the surprise! The show was so good mom couldn’t believe that people were costumed and painted into the scene. She thought the first few “tableau vivants” were examples and that a separate scene would appear with people. Driving home she told me that she expected the show to be boring and couldn’t believe how good it was with the live orchestra, staging, lighting and effects.¬† I just love sharing with people experiences like this.

If you go: Pack a blanket, binoculars and a picnic. The festival allows people to bring in food. It will be a great time!

A few years ago I had an opportunity to go backstage and watch the magic happen as the volunteers who appear in the finale-tradition tableau, “The Last Supper.” Check out my story written for the local paper HERE.

P.S. I WON THE CONTEST! I leave for Vienna a week from today! Thanks to all of you who voted! I’ll be blogging from Vienna for the Huffington Post!
