The Dream Assignment

July 2nd, 2010 · 4 Comments · Uncategorized

So, BIG NEWS, I’m one of finalists in the running to cover the 18th annual Vienna Life Ball for The Huffington Post’s style section! I still can’t believe it… Now it’s up to YOU!  Please vote (as much as you can through Wednesday, July 7) and tell your friends and the rest of the digital world! It’s really one of those opportunities that comes once in a lifetime so your support would be such a great gift. Thank you!

The Life Ball is an amazing event – it’s where fashion and activism for a worthy international cause come together. Every year, tens of thousands of people gather at Vienna’s City Hall Square for one of the largest HIV/AIDS fundraisers in the world. It’s usually an eccentric event filled with costumes, but this year there’s something for everyone: a gala evening sponsored by the American Foundation for AIDS Research hosted by Whoopi Goldberg in the nearby parliament and a Cotillion dance at Burgtheater.

The high profile events mark the kick-off of a a major AIDS conference July 18-23 in the Austrian capital. Last year $1.84 million was donated to support programs for people who are HIV positive or suffering from AIDS.  I’ve seen photos of this in the past and it  is quite the celebration!

{Yes, that is THE Patricia Field!}

The glamorous spectacle of celebrity attendees, live performances and international activism will begin with  a fashion show created by designers Diane Von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein and Kenneth Cole, using a catwalk shaped like an AIDS red ribbon in front of Vienna’s City hall. There are also a few musical performances, last year Katy Perry was part of the lineup. And being the big international superstar that he is, Bill Clinton will be the guest of honor at Life Ball this year in recognition of his charity work with the William J. Clinton Foundation.

I dug into my archives looking for photos of my last (and only) trip to Vienna. In 2003 I was lucky enough to be studying abroad in Florence, Italy and decided to go on a weekend adventure. I’m the 10-year-old looking one in the middle. I was there literally for an hour just waiting to exchange trains on the way to Prague. It was just enough time to have a sausage sandwich and beer and do a little exploring. Didn’t get to see much, so here’s to hoping I’ll have more to share soon!
