Bookshelf: Labor Day Weekend Reads

August 30th, 2013 · No Comments · reading list

Marisha Pessl is the author behind my second favorite book, ever. She wrote Special Topics in Calamity Physics, an intelligent and delightful read several years ago. Her second novel, Night Film, was released late this month and I can’t wait to dive right into it. I’m so glad its release was close to Labor Day weekend.

Lately I’ve used my Kindle, but this book, it must be read on paper. There are inserts in this book with images, I love when fiction writers use tools other than copy to help tell a story. It’s something I probably something I picked up and can’t let go from childhood. I also got A Visit from the Goon Squad, another book I’ve been advised that is best read on paper.

I made it a point to buy these books from an independent bookstore— seems only right when savoring a book the good ol’ fashioned way.

Chevalier’s Books fit the bill. It’s in Larchmont Village, possibly my favorite area in L.A., it is the perfect stretch of street plucked out of small town U.S.A. There are dozens of small shops and eateries. It’s a step back to a time where shopping and going out was an event, when there was a store for everything, but not everything in a store, ahem like Target.

Chevalier’s Books, 126 N. Larchmont Blvd., Monday – Saturday 10 – 6, Sunday 10 – 5.
